It all began more than a century ago when farmers decided to join hands to protect themselves by creating an agricultural mutual insurance fund. These local mutuals would be the basis of the development of Groupama. During the 60's the Group adapted to the changes in the French society and turned towards other insurance markets covering all non-life risks. In 1972, Groupama launched Life Insurance. In 1998, a new phase was reached with the purchase of the insurance company Gan, making Groupama the 3rd multiline insurer on the French market. From 2003, the Group began to market banking products. In France each year, many members attend the General Assemblies of the local mutuals, during which they vote on the accounts and learn about the new types of covers and new services offered by Groupama. These assemblies ensure that there is a shared consensus under the living embodiment of the principles of the mutual governance. This presence gives the Group great powers of mobilisation and responsiveness with its policyholders, especially when they are hit by natural disasters. The Group has always assumed great responsibility towards its members, in line with its vision of being a responsible insurer. Groupama has therefore adopted a very active policy of risk prevention, based on the protection of human life and assets. Faithful to its agriculture origin, the Group first developped a ruler prevention policy aimed at reducing the number of fires and accidents to people. This prevention is now extended to all risks and all categories of members and customers. Through practical actions the Group has taken a long time commitment in road accident prevention and prevention of domestic/professional risks.
