Job purpose

To provide overall management of the commercial Property, Liability and Schemes accounts, in order to meet the Division’s profit and growth objectives

Key responsibilities

  • Developing and reviewing underwriting policy, wordings, ratings, risk control strategy etc. in order to maintain and improve the quality of the Property, Liability and Schemes accounts, developing and amending underwriting guidelines as necessary. Ensuring that appropriate reinsurance is available across the account and on specific risks.
  • Underwriting business referred by Assistant Managers or Schemes Underwriters, including unusual cases and those requiring higher authority. Setting strategy for and responding to enquiries for schemes.
  • Analysing Property, Liability and Schemes account statistics (both manual and systems) identifying trends and forecast issues, and reporting to senior management as necessary. Implementing changes and strategies as appropriate.
  • Agreeing programmes for audits and technical reviews, and reviewing reports. Making visits to the SME Unit in Manchester periodically. Monitoring compliance with underwriting authorities and ensuring business is run and controlled with due diligence and in accordance with FSA requirements.
  • Organising, motivating and developing the Commercial Underwriting team in order to meet departmental objectives, ensuring effective communication and performance.
  • Dealing with and visiting brokers in connection with business development, Schemes, referrals and complaints in liaison with the sales and development team as appropriate.
  • Attending external meetings as may be required e.g. reinsurer’s and ABI. Liaising with claims management and technicians, conducting large loss audits and joint audits to ensure objectives are met. Obtaining and responding to market information as necessary.
  • Working with Propositions management to identify and develop new product initiatives and ensure underwriting involvement in product development.

Technical skills required

Essential:

  • Sound Commercial Property and Liability underwriting experience.
  • Highly numerate.
  • Sound IT skills including use of Excel spreadsheets.
  • Team management experience.
  • Sound leadership, negotiation and organisational skills.
  • Ability undertake performance analysis and provide reports in a focused and timely manner.

Desirable:

  • Underwriting management experience
  • ACII or higher

Circumstances

The job will travel to other locations and external meetings, seminars and/or conferences, on occasions involving overnight stays.
