Job Title: Commercial Lines Underwriter - Commercial
Reports to: Commercial Lines Service Manager
Location: Manchester

To develop and underwrite a portfolio of profitable Commercial Lines business through designated brokers in order to achieve business plans.
To underwrite commercial lines business within defined authority limits and in line with underwriting strategy. Referring unusual cases or those beyond authority limits to the appropriate Technical Underwriter or Manager with documented proposals. Specific Underwriting responsibility includes:
Risk selection – identifying risks that will make a positive contribution to the bottom line
Pricing – selecting and balancing the technical and competitive rate for the risk
Negotiation of pricing and acceptance terms to secure business
Risk Management including selection of risks requiring risk management, interpretation of reports, application of terms and requirements and subsequent follow up including revision of terms upon completion or ultimately the withdrawal of cover.
Application of appropriate cover restrictions, warranties, clauses and policy terms and conditions
To undertake general underwriting activities, dealing with Broker’s queries and correspondence. Including the input to the computer system of policy information and issue of documentation. To liaise with credit control department, ensuring that account queries are resolved quickly and efficiently.
To enhance and develop broker relationships in order to maximise business opportunities, ensuring a regular dialogue through telephone contact and when required by face to face review meetings. Identify and inform the Sales Team of potential new sources of business for development. Identify and produce action plans to address the underperformance of accounts.
To deal with technical referrals from Brokers and or the Claims department on policy wording and cover particularly in resolving disputes on interpretation and or application of policy terms and conditions.
To uphold the integrity of the Company’s approach to Customer Service including the specific areas of Treating Customers Fairly and Contract Certainty. To ensure all customer feedback in particular complaints are identified and recorded within GCFS.
To undertake any other duties as request by management on an ad hoc basis.
